FLEXIBLE ENDOSCOPIC EVALUATION OF SWALLOWING CLINICAL COMPETENCY

INTERMEDIATE PROFESSIONAL LEVEL  

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Identify a minimum of three ASHA guidelines, for speech language pathologists, performing endoscopic procedures.

2. Identify a minimum of three contraindications for safety, when performing a flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing procedure (FEES).

3. Describe a minimum of two differences between a modified barium swallow, and a flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing procedure. Knowledge of this information is essential to the speech language pathologist, when making the determination of the appropriate procedure, whether fluoroscopy or nasoendoscopy.

4. Participant will conduct with supervision, at a minimum of twenty-five normal passes,  with a nasoendoscopy scope, safely on live participants. The speech language pathologist will gain technical experience and also identify the anatomy with live volunteers.

5. Identify CPT codes for flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing procedures.

6. Describe the risks, indications, and contraindications of the flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing procedures (FEES).

7. Identify bolus preparation of liquids and solids. The options are needed by the speech language pathologist, when preparing for the patient’s FEES procedure.

8. Identify two compensatory strategy maneuvers. The compensatory strategies will be demonstrated on live participants. Strategies are required with patients, and the speech language pathologist, will identify the maneuvers to incorporate with patients as needed.

9. Participant will describe a minimum of ten medical terms for clinical documentation.

10. Carry out with supervision, a minimum of two flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing procedures (FEES). Speech language pathologist will demonstrate the identification of strategies, technical skill, and documentation for the FEES report.
